As a follow-up to the June 23 PTA meeting, the PTA will vote on using funds to support expenditures with the objective of benefiting the entire MNS student body on Thursday, July 6th at 6pm.

Every parent and teacher has one vote and all are encouraged to participate.

The expenditures are outlined below.
Update of Computer Technology* (replacement of classroom desktop computers for instruction – includes 5 year warranty)….$27,560
Music Cabinets (Storage of Supplies and Transport of Instruments)…..$15,000
Instructional Staff Supplement as an alternative to the above….$42,560 max

Additional Information on Computer Technology Upgrades
Upgrade the 27 outdated computers in classrooms that are hooked up to the Smartboards and are used for instruction. The machines in those classrooms were installed in April of 2008. Subsequently, these machines have been maintained for the last eight years in order to increase their longevity and ensure they are all running correctly. Unfortunately, these machines are out of coverage and cannot support the current version of Google Chrome or run the latest software needed for instruction (e.g. Smartboard software).

Following an extensive review of our budget and reserve funds, the PTA will vote on using funds to support several one-time expenditures with the objective of benefiting the current MNS student body. By working with the administration, we have identified several areas in which additional funding would be valuable.

We will be voting on using money from our funds for these expenditures at the next General PTA Meeting on June 23rd at 7:45 AM.

Every parent and teacher has one vote and all are encouraged to participate.

Clip and return your box tops to your child’s teacher in an envelope or baggie addressed to “BOX TOPS” and labeled with your child’s name, class/teacher and the number of box tops inside. Please join us for a cumulative series of meetings to create the PTA budget for the 2017-2018 school year. The remaining meetings will be held on the following Wednesdays from 6-8pm: May 17 and May 24. Please note these meetings are more than informational — they are working meetings. The programs and initiatives for next year to be funded by the PTA will be determined at these meetings. The first and second meetings (which already occurred) covered an overview of the DOE and PTA budgets, and a review of PTA generated revenue. The May 17 meeting will cover PTA expenses and the May 24 meeting will be a culmination of the proposed budget for next yr. It is not required that one attends all meetings to participate. All parents and teachers are automatically part of the PTA, and all are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend.

Move Up Night

Move Up Night will take place on the evening of Thursday, May 25. You will have a chance to meet with the teachers in your child(ren)’s grade next year, as well as the specialty teachers and special education team. During the three sessions, you will have a unique opportunity to get a preview of the school year to come. Each session will consist of a half hour presentation with a Q & A at the end, followed by a 15 minute gallery walk through the classrooms showcasing the sort of work your child(ren) will do next year. The teachers will be providing useful information about the upcoming school year and how to prepare your child throughout the summer. To complement the evening, the PTA and School Leadership Team will be hosting a Parent Leader/Volunteer Information Fair in the Cafe between 4:15-7:30pm where potential new volunteers/parent leaders can meet with members of the current PTA Executive Board, Committee Chairs and SLT to learn about opportunities to participate in the upcoming school year. Move Up Night is for parents/guardians only and babysitting will be available for MNS students currently attending K-5 at PS290 (no siblings please) at a cost of $5 per child. Read-A-Thon Fundraiser

The MNS PTA is excited to announce that we will be holding a Read-a-Thon Fundraiser from Monday, May 15 through Tuesday, May 30! A secret code was backpacked home with your child – use it to register online at the link specified in the flyer sent home. Students will solicit donations from family and friends, whose participation and support will encourage reading and build literacy skills, while supporting PS 290 at the same time! Our goal is to raise $20,000 and for our children to have fun reading at 10 reading sessions during the Read-a-Thon.
